Little Mouse Makes Friends
It was time for Little Mouse to take his very first trip out into the world. He was bursting with excitement, but he also felt a little nervous.
“Don’t stay out too long,” said Mr. and Mrs. Mouse as they fussed over him. “Be quick, be careful, and watch out for who you talk to.”
Little Mouse nodded, his tiny nose twitching. He peeped out of the hole and looked around. The farm was big and a little scary, but he knew it was time to be brave.
“Bye, Mommy! Bye, Daddy!” he squeaked, and off he scampered. He didn’t look back, even though Mr. and Mrs. Mouse were scurrying up and down, their whiskers twitching as they worried about him.
After what felt like forever, Little Mouse darted back into the hole.
“How was it, son?” asked Mr. Mouse.
“Oh, it was amazing!” said Little Mouse, his eyes shining. “But it was also a little scary.”
“Why?” asked Mrs. Mouse, her whiskers trembling. “What happened?”
“Well,” began Little Mouse, “while I was exploring, I saw two strange creatures. The first one was horrible. I think it was a monster!”
“A monster?” gasped Mrs. Mouse.
“Yes! It had two spindly legs covered in scales and sharp claws that scratched the ground. It kept beating its arms against its sides, and worst of all, it had bright red fleshy bits on its head and face. When I got close, it snapped its sharp beak at me! I thought it was going to eat me!”
Little Mouse shuddered at the memory, and Mr. and Mrs. Mouse gave him a big hug.
“But the other creature was nice,” said Little Mouse. “It had soft, velvety fur and a beautiful face. When it saw me, its bright eyes lit up, and it waved its long, elegant tail at me. I think it even smiled! It looked so kind and friendly. I wanted to go and make friends with it, but just as I was about to, the monster made a loud, terrible sound. I was so scared, I ran as fast as I could. Next time, I’m going to say hello to the furry creature. I’m sure it wants to be my friend.”
Mr. and Mrs. Mouse looked at each other and smiled.
“My dear son,” said Mr. Mouse, “the kind, furry creature you saw is Smudge, the farmer’s cat. She may look friendly, but she is our greatest enemy. Cats and mice can never be friends. You must always stay far away from her.”
“As for your monster,” added Mrs. Mouse, “that was Feathers, the farmyard rooster. Feathers might look scary, but he is actually our friend. He would never hurt a mouse. In fact, he was probably making that loud sound to scare away the cat and protect you. You are very lucky he was there.”
Little Mouse’s mouth dropped open in surprise.
“That’s why,” said Mr. and Mrs. Mouse together, “you should never judge someone by their appearance.”
Little Mouse nodded, feeling a little foolish but also very grateful.
On his next trip into the big, wide world, Little Mouse remembered his parents’ advice. He never went near Smudge the cat again—and he always gave Feathers a respectful nod of thanks whenever he passed by.

Chuột Nhỏ rùng mình khi nhớ lại, và ông bà Chuột ôm chặt lấy chú.
