The Great Animal Race
Long ago, the Jade Emperor, who ruled the heavens, decided to challenge all the animals to a race.
“The first twelve animals to cross the raging river and reach me will be remembered forever as the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac,” he announced. “Each of you will represent a different year.”
When the cat heard about the race, she felt confident she would win. She bragged about it to her neighbor, the rat, who she often teased.
“Of course, I’ll be the first and most important animal in the zodiac,” the cat purred proudly. “The Emperor would never choose a smelly little rat like you!”
But on the morning of the race, the clever rat played a trick. While the cat was still curled up asleep, the rat quietly snuck away to the riverbank and didn’t wake her.
By the time the cat opened her eyes, it was too late – she had missed the race. And that’s why, to this day, cats chase after rats wherever they see them!
When the rat reached the riverbank, eleven other animals were already there, ready to race. Among them were a strong ox, a fierce tiger, a lively rabbit, a big brown horse, a slippery snake, a fire-breathing dragon, a noisy rooster, a fidgety monkey, a small goat, an excited dog, and a slow pig.
The Jade Emperor raised his hand to signal the start of the race, and the animals leapt into action. They dived into the freezing river, but the strong current made it hard to swim.
The little rat struggled to move forward. The water swept him away and sent him crashing into the powerful ox. Seeing his chance, the rat grabbed onto the ox’s tail and climbed up onto his back.
The ox didn’t notice the rat and kept swimming strongly. He powered through the water and was the first to reach the other side of the river. As he charged toward the finish line, the rat suddenly leapt off his shoulder and scurried over the line, becoming the first animal of the zodiac.
The ox reached the line just seconds later and claimed second place.
“Congratulations, Rat!” said the Jade Emperor with a big smile.
Soon after, the fierce tiger arrived. She had swum hard, but her heavy fur had slowed her down. She growled with frustration but was proud to take third place.
The lively rabbit surprised everyone by coming in fourth. She had cleverly hopped across the river, jumping from one rock to another.
Then came the fire-breathing dragon, soaring through the air. The Jade Emperor looked puzzled. “Dragon, why didn’t you come first? You can fly!”
The dragon bowed his head and said, “I’m sorry, Jade Emperor. I heard some villagers crying for help and stopped to save them. That’s why I’m late.”
The Jade Emperor smiled and thanked the dragon for his kindness.
Next, the big brown horse galloped toward the finish line. But just as he was about to cross, the slippery snake slithered around his legs and shot ahead, taking sixth place. The horse followed right behind and came in seventh.
Close behind them came three unlikely friends – the small goat, the fidgety monkey, and the noisy rooster. Together, they had built a raft to cross the river.
The goat had used his strong horns to push the raft into the water, so his friends let him cross the line first, taking eighth place. The monkey followed in ninth, and the rooster finished tenth.
The excited dog arrived next, wagging her tail and looking proud.
“I thought you’d be here sooner,” said the Jade Emperor.
“Well, there were so many new smells to sniff along the way!” the dog said, smiling.
The Emperor laughed and patted her head as she claimed eleventh place.
Finally, there was a long wait before the slow pig waddled across the finish line, snorting and squealing.
“Why are you so late?” asked the Jade Emperor.
The pig grinned and said, “I got hungry, so I stopped to eat. Then I took a nap!”
Everyone laughed, and the pig became the twelfth and final animal of the zodiac.
From that day on, the twelve animals took turns guarding the gates of the Jade Emperor’s heavenly home. Each one represents a year in the Chinese zodiac, bringing good fortune and surprises.
